Camera beside best slr beneath $400?

Ok. I travel alot and will be going to my hometown boston. I want to take good pictures of the city and of wildlife contained by Maine. I also have two nieces and I want to take pictures of them. As plentiful of you may know toddlers and babies do funny things but i need a fast camera to takeover the moment.
What is the best camera for wildlife, urban cities, and family..? to far of a stretch?/?
Answers: For around $400 you'd get a Nikon D40 DSLR. A extremely capable camera. It would do what you need it to...
BUT.....
to do it's charge as well as it could, you'd need the lenses to move about with it. For wildlife you'd want at least a 75-300mm lens, so join $200 min. For capturing those speedy nieces, ideally you'd need a broad aperture lens that would autofocus with a D40 (long story, needless to enunciate not all lenses have the in-built motor to allow autfocus next to a D40 or D60. D80 and above, no problem) so add another few hundred.
The lens you'd get near the camera would be fine to get you going so long as the light around you be good enough to hang on to the shutter speed up when snapping those nieces, and you could live with a rather measly zoom when shooting wildlife. But TBH it's a compromise for both job. You'd need to be quite authentic about what you could expect to do with such a lens. great for broad everyday stuff, but not very specialist.
The flipside is, you could get a compact near a good zoom range which would I don`t know get you by for some wildlife shots, but would be pretty crap at capturing those speedy nieces crisply. Delay between the button press and shutter release is too long.
So, sorry, but it's a bit of a devil and reflective blue sea type situation. You'll have to compromise if money is a big issue.
Either bearing, I'd recommend a book on photography to get some basics set contained by your head. this will give you a bit more scholarship to play with and allow you to use whichever camera you get to the best of its potential, therefore getting you more of the pictures you're after.
