Review: I only just updated my DSLR collection to the Nikon D3100 from the Nikon D70. There are good reviews out there that you should check out. However, I would close to to share some of my first impressions.

Pro:
-Better image quality and lower hullabaloo at high ISO with the D3100
-MUCH MUCH lighter, which will be nice when traveling
-Larger LCD peak
-11 focus points, including 3D focus which tracks the motion of the subject or camera.
-1080p Video
-14 megapixels
-2nd Generation DSLR
-Quiet, quiet, quiet

Cons:
-No bracketing resort. Not a huge deal since I only bracket once a year
-Cannot use my older 50mm 1.8 lens. I knew this before purchasing the camera.
-As of 10/1/2010, Camera RAW for the D3100 is not supported surrounded by Photoshop or Lightroom. Need to shoot .jpg + RAW or use Nikon Capture NX2 for RAW files. That should be updated soon, so not a big deal.
-Can hear the lens focusing when recording video.
-No depth of enclosed space preview.
-Can't use wireless remote

I'm an amateur photographer and this camera meets my needs. I love the reality that it's small and light, with great aspect images. If I were a serious photographer and have more money to spare, I would wait and check out the D7000, which appears to have phenomenal specs. I'm content with my purchase and I highly recommend this camera. Source(s): Nikon D3100 14.2MP Digital SLR Camera

I'm not a Nikon user but I also enjoy heard many appropriate things about the 40. However consider this camera as well.

I own one and enjoy had for well over a year - it's simply excellent. Be aware however neither of these cameras is a magic bullet to excellent technical level. There is a learning curve you must respect to learn how to use these cameras to their full profit. If you're willing to go through it afterwards by all means consider both. If you're not likely then buy a point and shoot that does everything for you. Source(s): 30-year pro / hobby photographer
The D40 is an excellent entry level DSLR. Unfortunately it is not currently produced so you would have to buy a used one. They can be have for around $300.

If you want a new Nikon DSLR, I would recommend either the D3100 or D5000. Both are excellent.
Hey,

The D40 is perfect, but you can't get a new one - it's newly so old.

Good luck! The site has frequent more tutorials, tips, reviews and guides!
Just about any DSLR is going to be great for a learner. I also do not shoot Nikon, but I *highly* suggest saving money for additional lenses. As a tyro, you'll get more out of having the appropriate lens for the profession more than a high-end DSLR that you don't even understand the features/parameters for.

If money isn't an object, I would buy the topmost end entry level camera you can afford, of late in case you really achieve into digital photography. Source(s): Amateur photographer owner of 2 DSLR's, 1 35mm film SLR and several lenses, zooms and primes.
