A obedient DSLR for underneath $700?

I recently purchased an Olympus SP-800UZ, and the pictures were phenomenal...but the battery-operated life was horrible and I am going to dispatch it back today. Now that I am camera-less (yet again) I need some serve finding a new camera. I have settled to go with a DSLR...I hold had good experiences beside Canons but if you know of something better feel free to share. I would like to step for something under about $700. Thanks everyone!!
