Answers: Nikon D3000 is a newer model and better features.More mega pixel, faster continuous shooting, more auto focus point and bigger blind.

If you are talking give or take a few image quality, the two are close plenty that you'll never be able to tell the difference beside the naked eye. 4mp of difference in resolution even when jump from 6mp to 10mp is simply not a huge improvement give equal final print size. In simple terms, an 8x10 photo from a D40 looks identical to an 8x10 photo of matching scene from a D3000.
Build quality is the same because the bodies are almost exact. The D3000 is a replacement for the D40 and D60 as Nikon's entry-level camera. What's different is the D3000 gets the D60's 10mp imaging sensor and a better autofocus sensor similar to that of the D90. The D3000 shoots a half-frame per second faster in continuous shooting. However; at 3 frames per second, the D3000 is no speed demon.
The D40 give up nothing to the D3000 in lingo of overall quality. Having said that, the D40 does give up the features mentioned above. Still, for a hot DSLR owner in this market segment, those features aren't credible to be missed. You will not "out grow" or wear out a D40 and faster than your would a D3000. The only thing that will come up is you'll spend less money to get impossible to tell apart pictures and have more money available to spend on lenses.
My recommendation is buy an SD card and appropriate it to a camera store that still has the D40 in stock. If at adjectives possible, handle and shoot both side-by-side. I am not saying the D3000 isn't a better camera surrounded by some ways. It is in fact and superior camera. However, I am also saying the differences between the D3000 and D40 are negligible contained by practical use. The point being that if you can get a D40 for smaller amount money, the D40 is a very good choice.
Nikon d40 is a good camera but is solely 6 mpx
